No, seriously, that’s the name of it.
First off, let me announce that after this review, I have another wrestling review (tomorrow) and a whopping 6 new album reviews coming. It’s going to be a busy and eventful week here on this blog, so be prepared. I would have reviewed the albums and the show already, but in the midst of my dog passing away and a couple other things coming up, that was delayed a while, but it’s all good now and i’m ready to write again and all that shit will be up this week. But first, this.
Another couple weeks, another WWE ppv. This time around we have the very oddly named Raw-brand ppv, Great Balls of Fire, which sent a shockwave of ridicule across the internet wrestling community upon it’s announcement. But be that as it may, the show is in the books, and I gotta say, it was a pretty damn good show altogether! I don’t say that too often these days about a WWE show, but they didn’t let us down this time. This was a good show with some good matches and a hell of an angle that has me curious. Job well done. So, without any further bullshit rambling, let’s get into the action:
Seth Rollins vs Bray Wyatt
Starting things off with the Eater of Pins and the Architect. Pretty decent opener overall. Nice, competitive and at the right tone-setting pace with good back and forth action and some decent spots. Shockingly, Seth Rollins eats the pin this time after a thumb to the eye and a Sister Abigail by Bray. Wow. Not a bad match.
Enzo Amore vs Big Cass
I was expecting nothing more than a squash out of this one, and we got just that and then some. This was an short, sweet and brutal ass kicking to Enzo via Big Gass (cool new theme, by the way) and that’s really all it needed to be. Cass is going to be a star and that showed here for sure. He even looks looks bigger with the white wrist tape. Overall, pretty good squash, where these two go from here, i’m not sure, but it’ll be interesting to find out.
30-Minute Tag Team Iron Man Match: Sheamus & Cesaro (c) vs The Hardy Boyz (Raw Tag Team Title)
I knew to expect a good one here, and it was. This was 30 minutes of really go action and storytelling between these two teams. I love the Hardys and was rooting for them, but I wasn’t surprised at Sheamus and Cesaro winning. Not complaining either. They’re a good team. Overall, really good match as expected with some good spots and some blood via Matt Hardy getting hard-way’d. ouch. Satisfying ending despite my wrong prediction and hopefully this leads to something… delightful for the Hardys. Hmmmm.
Alexa Bliss (c) vs Sasha Banks (Raw Womens Title)
Ladies time. I was expecting something very interesting out of this one, considering these two apparently don’t like each other in real life. Damn. This was kind of a slug fest as these two were putting in some stiff shots on each other. They even rehashed the injured arm fake-out from Alexa that she pulled a while back. Still looks pretty freaky. All in all, pretty good match with a kinda meh, but understandable finish. In excellent heel fashion, Alexa gets herself intentionally counted out to give Sasha the win, but keeps the title. Makes sense for her character. It all ends with a post-match brawl up the ramp that ends in Sasha’s favor. This should be an interesting feud and a good one if handled right. We’ll see where it goes.
The Miz (c) vs Dean Ambrose (Intercontinental Title)
Honestly, this feud has been going on way to long and hopefully this is the end of it. This was a pretty decent match with your usual sneaky heel tactics from The Miz and the “Miztouage” (ughh). Short story short, Miz wins after a sneak-shot to the back of the head on Dean by Bo Dallas. Short, sweet and to the point. Again, hopefully these two move on and do something different now. Especially Dean Ambrose; preferably a heel turn because his character has become VERY stale.
Ambulance Match: Roman Reigns vs Braun Strowman
First the match. As expected, these two put on a war of a match. Braun dominated most of the way through, but Roman had his comebacks and put up just as much of a fight. Again, it was a war. Really good match with a pretty out-of-nowhere finish. Braun is in position in front of the ambulance doors, Roman goes for the spear and Braun just sidesteps it, sending Roman into the ambulance and shuts the doors for the win. Uhh, ok.
Well, post-match, Roman emerges again from the ambulance, attacks Braun and throws him into the ambulance, gets in the drivers seat, drives it to the parking lot area and just puts it in reverse and drives the motherfucker full speed into the back of a truck and just folds it like an accordion. Goddamn! An impromptu ”match” that no one gave a shit about was put on as a split-screen shows the carnage and short story short, the jaws of life are brought out and they pry the doors open and out crawls a bloody Braun who staggers away, refusing medical help as he’s cheered by the crowd. Jesus fuck, what an angle.
Was this a double turn? Did Reigns turn heel? Braun is sure as shit going to be a babyface after this. Guess we’ll find out on Raw. Crazy fucking angle and really good match!
Brock Lesnar (c) vs Samoa Joe (Universal Title)
Main event time! The dream match we’ve all been waiting for.
For the first time ever, the two baddest motherfuckers in WWE today square up for the ugly ass red belt in what was bound to be a drag out goddamn brawl. Before the bell even rang, that’s exactly what we were treated to. Joe attacks Brock right off the bat and drives him through the announcers table and gets back in the ring. Brock crawls back in, the bell rings and we get a back and forth brawl between the two that honestly had me wondering if the belt was going to end up going to Joe. Brock bounces back with some suplexes, Joe attempts the Coquina Clutch a few times to no avail, and in another out-of-nowhere finish, Brock counters the last attempt with an F5 for the win. Brock remains champ.
Pretty damn good match overall. We wanted a fight, we got a fight. I wish the finish was a little better, but it was what it was. Not sure where either of these two go from here; the rumor is Brock vs Roman at SummerSlam, but let’s first see where this whole ambulance crash thing goes. I’m very intrigued for Raw tomorrow (for the first time in ages) and hopefully we’ll get some answers then.
”Wrap this up” chants during the Iron Man Match… shut up.
Overall, not a bad show. The only thing I can really complain about is the damn name of the show, but it is what it is. Roman Reigns’ attempted murder on Braun was the highlight of the show and has me intrigued for Raw tomorrow night. I have to see where this goes. Everything else was decent to really good. The Iron Man match was really good, the Women Title match was really good and the main event was really good. For a show with a name as dumb as it is, it was a pretty good one and I have no real gripe with it. Very interesting to see where things go heading into SummerSlam.
Until next time.
